VOIP Technology

VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. It is the technology that enables you to make free phone calls to your friends by using the standard internet connection.

VIOP technology provides with three different types by which you can connect with you friends:
  1. Computer to computer
  2. ATA
  3. IP phones
The computer to computer type requires a microphone, software that supports the technology, speakers, sound card, and a service provider and internet connection. There are companies that provide free service for this or charge a very minimum amount of service fees so that you can take the facility. In the IP phones type you have to use this phone which is like the ordinary phone in appearance but with the additional feature of the Ethernet connector that connect to your router and thus enables you to make a call. ATA is an Analog Telephone Adapter. This is a device that connects your phone to your computer having internet connection. Thus for this you require an adapter, a computer and the service provider that give you the internet connection.

The VOIP technology works on the concept of the conversion of the analog signals to digital signals. In this the words which you say on your microphone are received as the sound waves. These are in the analog form and need to be converted to the digital forms so that they are transmitted. At the receiver end these signals are again converted into the analog form and the receiver listen the words you said. The sound or the data is converted into small bundles of data called the packets, these packets travel to the receiver end and there they assemble converted to the voice that you listen.

Uses
The technology is advancing at a rapid pace and is getting popular among the individuals and the entrepreneurs alike. It brings advantages to both the groups. For individuals it is connecting and talking to the friends by making free long distance phone calls.

While for business and other professionals the uses are immense. They can conduct and participate in web conferencing. The employees and the associates can conduct the meetings online. The large organizations connect to the other departments and talk to the employees. This technology can thus replace the trunkline connections helping them save a lot of finances being fueled on the traditional mode of connectivity. The technology is also advantageous in the colleges providing e-learning courses or those planning for restructuring the college by adopting the computer as a mode of interaction and learning in the classrooms.
